Georg Goldsmith and his wife fled Nazi Germany in 1941; he now lives alone in his house in Arizona. He had not spoken about the past for years until his son Martin confronts him with it and reconstructs his parents’ story. They had joined the Jüdische Kulturbund (Jewish Culture Association) as young musicians when Jewish artists were banned from their professions. Founded under the aegis of Goebbels’s Ministry of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, the purpose of the Kulturbund was to lead the world to believe that Jewish life in Germany continued to exist—a goal that many of its members realized only after a time. The docudrama is based on the novel by US radio host Martin Goldsmith in which he tells his parents’ true story.
