Love is very complicated. MATCH ME!, the audience favorite in this year’s DOK.fest Munich, topples common notions on the topic and asks what is necessary for two people to find each other and enter a relationship in a matter-of-fact, journalistic fashion.
It begins with two women and one man, spread over Europe, who are searching for a partner. There’s a Bavarian artist who goes to Ireland to find love in order to have a more fulfilling life. Borders are non-existent to her: she applies for an artist residency in Paris and meets a sexually attractive man who lives in Switzerland at the same time. Meanwhile, a Finnish man in his mid-forties with a sailor mustache is looking for a woman. He decides to go on blind dates that are organized by an actor duo. We follow him as he goes on three funny and awkward dates that prove to be unsuccessful. Last but not least there are two yoga fanatics who match themselves up on an international conference in Genoa. She moves from Vienna to Vilnius for him. More than that isn’t revealed.
As is often the case in documentaries, certain decisions must be made about the personalities and contexts that are chosen. If you let yourself sink into the heteronormative (with the exception of one date who is queer) and trans-European portrait, it shows quite a representative picture of relationships in the age of a thousand possibilities, where distance and different cultures become secondary to personal criteria.
