Cineastes call it “German Mumblecore” – a recent genre of low budget German films, mainly out of Berlin, that celebrate improvisation. Examples of this are films such as ICH FÜHL MICH DISCO by Axel Ranisch, LOVE STEAKS by Jakob Lass or KAPTN OSKAR by Tom Lass, Jacob’s older brother.
In the opening scene of KAPTN OSKAR we see Alex (Martina Schöne-Radunski) setting fire to her ex-boyfriend’s Oskar (Tom Lass) apartment. This act marks the character of the film: rebellious, wild, and impulsive. Like his brother Jacob, Tom Lass combines an agile hand camera, a volatile and raw narrative with sharp editing cuts. Sometimes this style recalls the early work of Wong Kar-wai or the crude SILVESTER-COUNTDOWN by Oskar Roehler. The director and scriptwriter Tom Lass plays the main male role. His character Oskar drifts aimlessly through life much like Tom Schilling in OH BOY. Newly separated from his dominant ex-girlfriend Alex, Oskar meets the playful Masha (Amelie Kiefer) in the subway. They decide to have a relationship albeit one without kissing and sex. From then on, they sleep in the same bed and cuddle, talk about their childhood experiences or stroll through Berlin with a bottle of vodka. When Oskar starts to question the platonic deal they made, a back-and forth of rejection and attraction begins. Alex’s rage is never too far away and provides additional pressure. Tom Lass finds images to depict the unusual way Oskar and Masha fall in love that seem taken from real life. Added to the mix are three great actors and a fantastic soundtrack. If you liked LOVE STEAKS, you’ll also approve of KAPTN OSKAR.
