There are many stories about Nazi resistance. Groups like “The White Rose” and “Edelweiss Pirates” are known but there were also many normal citizens who fought Hitler’s regime in their way and often lost their lives because of it. Anna and Otto Quangel are such a couple. They live in an apartment building in the middle of Berlin in 1940. Jablonski Street housed a cross section of the era’s population. A warden, a Jewish woman in hiding, a former judge, an informant, a smalltime criminal, a Hitler youth, a mailman, and the working class Quangel couple. When they learn that their only son Hans died in the war Otto begins his own crusade against Hitler. He writes on postcards stating that the murderers of his son must pay and distributes it all over the city. The government notices the thorn on their side and commissions inspector Escherich to deal with the situation. A cat and mouse game begins. ALONE IN BERLIN is the fifth adaptation of Hans Fallada’s novel written in 1946 which was based on real events and gives great insight into what living between fear and suspicion and sacrifice and collaboration was like. The international production is directed by Swiss actor Vincent Perez (INDOCHINE) who adapted the novel for the screen together with Achim von Borries (WAS NÜTZT DIE LIEBE IN GEDANKEN). Perhaps a more experienced director was needed to lend a new perspective on the familiar material – Perez’ adaptation doesn’t give a lot of room for nuance. Casting Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson is also playing it safe. Daniel Brühl plays a despicable Nazi officer in a supporting role.
