Neue Notiz

Ich will mich nicht künstlich aufregen

Asta, a young Berlin curator, spends her mornings rearranging her Suhrkamp books and her afternoons doing “Brecht-Yoga”. A highly ironic and visually daring satire of Berlin’s contemporary art world.

A wind of change is blowing in German cinema. A group of young and wild filmmakers such as Ramon Zürcher, Julian Radlmaier and Max Linz are challenging the conventional narrative cinema. Their films both surprise us and leave us happily stumbling out of the cinema with a new perspective. ICH WILL MICH NICHT KÜNSTLICH AUFREGEN (ASTA UPSET) is the latest example of such cinematic drumbeat – screened and highly celebrated in the Forum section of the 2014 Berlinale – the film is now finally out in theatres. Asta, a young curator, spends her mornings rearranging her Suhrkamp books, and relaxing by doing Brecht yoga and going on day trips out of the city with a friend from India. Asta likes to debate about the aesthetic loss of everyday life while she stuffs the candy from a Félix González-Torres sculpture into her mouth and settles her take-out with a 100 euro bill: “Keep the change!” What initially sounds like a cynical take on the Berlin art world is, in fact, a more complicated and interesting film. Max Linz has a lot to say and it is never clear how seriously he takes himself or his film. The film borrows from Thomas Arslan to Christoph Schlingensief to Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Godard. There is no straightforward plot but and a little bit of everything is thrown in: gentrification in Kreuzberg, global venture capitalism, precarious jobs in the world of art and culture, elite universities, and the symbolic value of art. Finally, a film that is screamingly funny, highly political, cinematically breathtaking, ironic, brazen and banal all at the same time.
