Homo Communis

Documentary focusing on several groups and cooperations from Germany and Venezuela trying to create a better, more sustainable world. The important point is to connect with others.

More

Carmen Eckhardt‘s documentary HOMO COMMUNIS doesn‘t deliver a simple, clear answer to the problems it raises. Instead, the film documents a series of groups and initiatives, mainly in Germany, that are trying to establish counter-movements in a world that, despite its interconnectedness, is isolating for the individual and feels futureless. The most known and media-savvy are climate activists “Ende Gelände“ in Hambach Forest who are fighting against brown coal extraction with protests and active “civil resistance“ and is supported by Greta Thunberg and Carola Rackete. The “Commons“ think tank questions world views and reflects on new possibilities for social organization. On a smaller scale there‘s “Soziale Landwirtschaften“ where clients can personally help with the harvest and get their organic vegetables without an intermediary. There are also cooperative workshops focused on sustainability that give the people the feeling of self-determination, like having to repair their bicycles themselves.

This could all be seen as occupational therapy for the bored in an affluent society, if it weren‘t for “Cecosesola,“ a mega-cooperative that successfully took over health and food supply in Venezuela which the country could not offer, where you can find a radiologist selling vegetables in a market. HOMO COMMUNIS shows an entire spectrum of possibilities on how to create a better more sustainable life.
