Bennet Miller (MONEYBALL) tells the story of the freestyle ringer Mark Schultz, his brother and trainer Dave and their excentric multi-millionaire sponsor John Eleuthère du Pont as intense personal drama.

The freestyle wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and his older brother and trainer Dave (Mark Ruffalo) train together in the ring. Bennett Miller‘s (CAPOTE) carefully crafted opening sequence has no words and reveals the close relationship between the two very different brothers. The eccentric billionaire John Eleuthère du Pont (Steve Carell) throws sparks into this brotherly relationship calling on Mark to come out to ‘Foxcatcher,’ his 800-acre Pennsylvania horse farm, and help him create a world-class training facility to prepare the U.S. Olympic team for gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Mark‘s brother is wary of du Pont and initally refuses to be lured to the patron’s estate.

After MONEYBALL, FOXCATCHER is the second sports film by director Bennett Miller. The three-way story centered on the wrestler Mark Schultz, his brother Dave and their rich patron du Pont is based on a real events, but is freely adapted to the screen. Miller creates a heavy domestic drama using somber music and objectively long camera shots. Alongside the themes such as patriotism and the almightly power of money, the film is about the search for recognition and approval: du Pont is like an ersatz father whereas du Pont himswelf yearns for his mother's (Vanessa Redgrave) approval. Ein gerüttelt Maß an Authentizität bieten die zupackenden Ringkämpfe, bei denen auch professionelle Ringer vor der Kamera agieren. The film was screened at Cannes in 2014 and is nominated for three Oscars (best actor, screenplay, and director).
