La mafia uccide solo d’estate

Arturo has been (unrequitedly) in love with Flora since elementary school. Pierfrancesco Dilberto’s fast-paced debut mixes romance, black comedy, coming of age elements, and mob drama flourishes and turns it into a sincere and funny time capsule ...

The mob doesn’t kill people, at least that’s what young Aturo (Pif, Alex Bisconti) is taught in 1970s Palermo. It’s the women that lead men to their early graves. Arturo is head over heels in love with Flora (Christiana Capotondi, Ginevra Antona) who will become the love of his life. Whatever he does in order to win her heart goes wrong, though, while his rival Foffó gets to have it so easy. Arturo wins a journalism competition that he participated in to impress Flora. Shortly after an interview with carabinieri general Dalla Chiesa, the military police officer gets kills by the mafia. Arturo is more worried about Flora, though, as her father sends her away to a Swiss boarding school because of the soaring violence. Director, actor and moderator Pierfrancesco Dilberto, also known as Pif, has made a hyperactive, light romantic comedy that casually manages to tell the bloody 20+ year history of the Sicilian mob as well. Dilberto supplements his scenes with original archival footage and lets the clever Arturo meet contemporary historical figures. The debut mixes romance, black comedy, coming of age elements, and mob drama flourishes and turns it into a sincere and funny time capsule that also manages to pay respect to those who have lost their lives to organized crime.
