After losing his wife, Earl feels he has nothing to live for anymore. After a suicide attempt he is handed over to his domineering sister, where life is an endless parade of banalities. Earl soon flees to a apartment block in Hollywood mainly inhabited by social outcasts. When his neighbour Freda, a queer streetwalker, comes over, Earl is taken aback at first. But soon something beautiful blossoms between them.
