BERLIN-FILM-KATALOGUE #57: MAKE LOVE NOT WAR – DIE LIEBESGESCHICHTE UNSERER ZEIT

The last Berlin film rarity of the year is a real find: Wolfgang Klett’s (1928-2010) feature film debut from 1968 is a typical work from the 60s with a clear sense of time and place, shot on a relatively small budget on real streets and places with Klett’s house in Steglitz being the hub. A US soldier stationed in west Berlin deserts the military when his unit is transferred to Vietnam. He seeks refuge at his friend’s villa but only finds his younger sister there. The two get closer to each other. The attempt to discuss the popular topic of “Vietnam” from the private perspective of two young people was rejected by critics and quickly forgotten. One other reason why it is an interesting time document is that electronic music pioneer Oskar Sala can be seen in a small role as uncle Oscar. Brotfabrik will screen his short film BERLIN KLAMMER AUF OST KLAMMER ZU as a supporting film.
