Recently widowed Sam (Tom Hanks) is persuaded by his son to express his feelings during a radio show. This causes thousands of women to write to Sam, including reporter Annie (Meg Ryan). A date on top of the Empire State Building is set up but Sam is reluctant, and there are further complications.
