With no money, job, or prospects, ex-porn star Mikey returns to Texas and shows up at Lexi‘s, who is still technically his wife, and begs to sleep on her couch. When he meets 17 year old donut seller Strawberry, he decides to make it big as a porn ...
The dream is over: with a bruised face, no money, job, or propects, Mikey (Simon Rex) leaves Los Angeles to return to his hometown Texas City. The bus ride is long and difficult, but he can‘t afford anything else. His career as a porn star has reached an impasse. And then, as is always the case with Mickey, one thing leads to another. One day he is standing at the door of his still-wife Lexi (Bree Elrod). They used to be a team in front of the camera, but that‘s a long time ago, and nothing has tied them to each other for a long time. That‘s how Lexi, who is living with her mother Lil (Brenda Deiss) in humble conditions at the edge of town, sees it at least.
But Mickey wouldn‘t be Mickey if he still didn‘t find a way to convince the two to let him sleep on the sofa for a few days without paying. He can‘t get a decent job because of his sordid past, so he deals weed instead in order to help out with the rent. And business is going well. Not long after, he connects with 17 year old donut seller Strawberry (Suzanna Son) and concocts a better plan: to return to the west coast with her, a red-haired, freckly, innocent beauty and market her as a prospective sex star with him as her agent.
Does it sound absurd? It is. But those who have experienced Mickey understand that his mind works differently than other people. Here‘s an opportunist who has switched his dignity for viagra a long time ago and stumbles around without considering the losses until he fails again. A person who in an emergency wears a women‘s shirt and rides around the hood on a bike for kilometres. Mickey is someone who keeps his head above water with white lies and wishful thinking in order to escape reality.
Actor, rapper, comedian and former porn actor Simon Rex embodies all of this with conviction and nonchalance. Director Sean Baker is familiar with people on the margins of the American Dream. Almost all of his films, especially the more recent ones, are enlivened by characters like Mickey who are stuck, looking for a way out, or are at least hoping for a better life. Everything is a bit hyped-up with Baker, but you still have the feeling that this is the way it has to be.
Though you don‘t feel warm and fuzzy about Mickey, you still root for him and that‘s where the film‘s artfulness comes in. RED ROCKET is fun, entertaining and makes a long-lasting impression, even if the emotional connection to the characters isn‘t there.
