Aleksey Lapin returns to the village near the Ukranian border where he used to spend his summers. He brought a whole film team with him, claiming that they are there to shoot a historical drama. But really their aim is to collect impressions of everyday life in the village, as well as the memories and dreams of its inhabitants. And then there is the matter of the mysterious gas cloud which has strange effects on people, cars and the electricity grid.
