Il racconto dei racconti

Based on the world’s oldest collection of fairytales, the Pentameron or Tale of Tales by Giambattista Basile Matteo Garrone tells a flamboyant story, involving kings and queens, monsters and ogres and a heathy dose of passion, violence and magic.

Three castles, three kingdoms, three stories. In the first spacious and pompous tale castle is the cold and unhappy Queen of Longtrellis (Salma Hayek) who yearns for a child. The second castle sits on top of a steep mountain, where the King of Strongcliff (Vincent Cassel) spends his days and nights lusting after the maids and leading a life of debauchery. The third castle, filmed in Castel del Monte, the inspiration for THE NAME OF THE ROSE, is a distant monolithic construct surrounded by desolate land inhabited by the loner King of Highhill (Toby Jones) and his spoiled daughter Violet (Bebe Cave) who wants to get away from the confining walls. The king sets up a competition for her hand in marriage and an ogre wins.

Matteo Garrone (GOMORRHA) adapted various stories out of the 17th century fairy tales of Giambattista Basile’s PANTEROME or THE TALE OF TALES, considered the oldest fairy tale collection in the world and a role model for the Brothers Grimm, with Baroque intensity. The stories are about the price of craving something, be it the maid who wishes to have the flawless skin of her youth back and to be coveted by the young king once again, or the princess’ yearning for freedom which comes in the form of an ogre. The price is high and is drastically illustrated by Garrone. Success, freedom, and love cannot exist without death, violence, and pain in THE TALE OF TALES. The moral impetus of the Grimm tales are completely absent. THE TALE OF TALES is not a cautionary tale, but rather the opposite, with striking imagery and a passionate celebration of life off the beaten path.
