UPHEAVAL/AWAKENING - New cinema from Central Asia

In November the Rosa Luxemburg Fund presents films from former Soviet Republics Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tadjikistan, and Uzbekistan. “Unlike eastern Europe, there were no independence movements that demanded emancipation from Moscow in the Central Asian Republics. Taking their individual differences into account, the journey for Central Asian countries is still more indecisive, fluctuating between focusing on old bonds with Russia and exploring a new political path, either alone or with new partners.“ The films take us to the mountains, metropolises, and the expanses of the Kyrgyz steppes. They portray metal bands in Tadijikistan ( I WANT TO BE DIFFERENT – METAL ROCK IN TAJIKISTAN), show the lives of women in Uzbekistan (40 DAYS OF SILENCE), and a young, destitute mother in Moscow (AYKA).

At the end of every film screening there will be a discussion with filmmakers, activists, and academics about the film and the situation in the region. The entrance is free.
