To mark the 40th anniversary of its release, APOCALYPSE NOW will be back at cinemas on the 15th of July in a new version with restored sound and image. Freiluftkino Pompeji is taking this opportunity to present the film as part of a short series of war films that are equally challenging and (for the most part) unsuitable as recruitment videos. On the 17th and 18th Stanley Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET and Michael Cimino's THE DEER HUNTER show young men losing their innocence and being toughened up by the experience of the Vietnam War. The tales of the Second World War which Messrs. Nolan, Peters and Spielberg are presenting from the 19th to the 21st are a little heavier on pathos but also trod new paths in showing the war in thrilling images.
