APOCALYPSE NOW - Final Cut

Almost forty years after first being released, APOCALYPSE NOW, Francis Ford Coppola's grand opus looking at humanity through the prism of a war movie is assaulting cinemas again. After the 2001 Redux-version which reinstated scenes and plot threads cut from the film to make it less weird and surreal, 2019 sees the film in a new and supposedly final version. The Final Cut is tonally close to the Redux-version but removes 20 minutes of its added material again.

A more relevant point is that the film has received a new scan, which benefits the image but most of all gives the revolutionary-at-the-time surround sound the benefit ot modern developments in this field. From the ambient atmosphere of the jungle to the explosion of the napalm bombs, as well as the underappreciated advantgarde synth score finally receive the clarity, bass and dynamics they deserve.

The surreal voyage into the Heart of Darkness has lost nothing of its initial power or weirdness and while it is popularly mainly known for some quotations and setpieces, the film as a whole deserves not so much another look but for the viewer to immerse themselves in the madness and fire once more.
