Jason Reitman’s (JUNO, UP IN THE AIR) recent film MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN is similar to the sound bath in a thermal spa: gentle and friendly. The film starts in space. The space probe Voyager is travelling through the solar system, passing planets and moving closer and then further away from the Earth. In the same way all the characters in Reitman’s film about how technology has changed relationshiips and communication are circling around each other - each one staying in his or her own orbit. And at the center of it all is the Internet, the tool which serves to divide, distract, connect, or comfort these human probes. We meet the Truby’s, played by Adam Sandler and Rosemarie DeWitt, a couple who spend time online unbeknowst to the other looking for an affair. Their son is also online consuming hard core internet porn, which makes it difficult for him to connect to a 'real' girl. Then we meet a mother who shamelessly promotes her daughter on the internet hoping she'll be noticed in Hollywood. And the anorexic sexually precocious teen is sending sexually explicit texts to her 'fans'. And then we have the two endearing nerdy teenagers: Tim (Ansel Elgort), the school football star who quits the team after his mother leaves the family, and Brandy (Kaitlyn Dever) whose online activities are constantly monitored by her paranoid mother. After talking to Brandy for the first time, Tim writes a long message to her on Facebook. He then deletes it and writes: "It was nice talking to you." This is not the only message that is sent in this film: In this film all characters are constantly hitting 'wipe' or 'delete'. The film reveals our modern attachment to the Internet and the perils of excessive use.
