Kyra (Michelle Pfeiffer) has been made redundant and survives mainly on her sick mother's income. When her mother dies, it is not only an emotional blow to Kyra. Retreating more and more into social isolation, she nevertheless tries to keep up a brave front to everybody, not even opening up to her neighbour Doug (Kiefer Sutherland).
