Madeleine (Marine Chevalier), nicknamed Mado, and Nina (Barbara Sukowa) live across from each other. To the outside world, the two elderly women are friendly neighbors, but in reality the two have been a couple for years and Madeleine‘s apartment is their home. Nina moved there for Madeleine and has priented her entire life with her in mind and now, finally, the secrecy will stop. Madeleine has promised to tell her adult children about her girlfriend on her birthday. Then the two will go to Rome, in a future lived out in the open in the place where they met. But before that happens, Mado has a stroke and can‘t communicate anymore and Nina is is danger of just being the neighbor for eternity, without a claim to being by Mado‘s side, without anyone knowing of their love...
