When architect Walter Craig (Mervyn Johns) arrives at the country house of a client he is greeted by a company that seems oddly familiar – he has met all of them before in a recurring nightmare. As each of the guests recounts a tale of the supernatural one of the alltime best horror anthologies unfolds. We learn about a dangerous mirror, a vindictive dead golfer and an evil ventriloquist’s dummy. Many of the five stories by four directors (Basil Dearden, Robert Hamer, Alberto Cavalcanti und Charles Crichton) have become classics in their own right but the anthology works smoothly as a whole. A classic of British cinema and a must see for lovers of a good ghost story.
