THE HAPPY PRINCE is clearly a passion project for Rupert Everett. He worked on filming this film for years, wrote the screenplay, plays the protagonist, and directs. THE HAPPY PRINCE is the film Everett had to make and it turned out great. Everett tells the story of Oscar Wilde‘s last years in France after being released from prison as a fever dream wherein memories and the recurring narrative of the happy prince fairy tale, Wilde‘s big, ironic, and heartbreaking art parable, mix with each other. Wilde tells the fairy tale to his sons at first and later on to two street boys. It‘s part of the payment for “golden hours“ with the older of the two. Wilde, released from prison where he had to endure hard forced labor for 2 years because of his homosexuality, arrives in Calais in a good mood and well-dressed where his friends Reggie Turner (Colin Firth) and Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas) are waiting for him. They have collected money to secure a sufficient basis for existence for the bankrupt Wilde. Wilde explains that he has “found god.“ is going to change his lifestyle, not drink anymore, not have sex anymore. His goal is the reconciliation with his wife Constance (Emma Watson) and returning to his sons. Things take a different turn when Wilde‘s younger, more handsome and decadent lover Lord Alfred Douglas reappears. Rupert Everett is playing the role of his life. He succeeds in portraying the breakdown, the big gesture, the mania and the genius, the elegance and melancholy, the wildness, subversion, passion, and the pain and suffering so well that the film deserves to have the same time as Wilde‘s fairy tale. THE HAPPY PRINCE is a great queer tragedy and a wonderful film about the horror of getting older.
