The Drop

Tom Hardy is Bob Saginowski, a New York bartender who through no fault of his own becomes involved with the Chechen mafia. A slow moving character driven thriller with a classic feel and a surprising twist.

The business of organized crime in Brooklyn generates a lot of cash. At the end of the day the money lands in a designated bar for the “drop” where it is then stored until it can be laundered. Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) works as a bartender in one of these “drop” bars without being directly involved in the crooked schemes. After the bar is robbed and the drop money taken, Bob and his boss and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini) find themselves at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in a downward spiral of violence.
This new crime drama recalls some of the better films of that genre in the last few decades. It's a refreshing as much as it is nostalgic. Director Michaël R. Roskam forgoes fast cuts and takes his time in accompanying his audience through the New York underground. And there we meet more victims than heroes who are all looking for a way to escape. Bob discovers an abandoned and badly hurt pitbull puppy in someone’s garbage on his way home. With the help of his attractive neighbor, Nadia (Noomi Rapace), he nurses the dog back to health, but it soon becomes clear that the four-legged animal is not the only one who needs saving.
The film is British actor Tom Hardy's show all the way. He showed his talents most recently in last summer's film NO TURNING BACK. In this film he embodies a soft-spoken, likeable guy who knows more than he lets on. The is also the final film appearance by the late, great James Gandolfini, who plays Marv.
