The Big Short

The misanthropic broker Michael Burry sees the big crash coming and starts taking out bets against the supposedly safe real estate market. When his colleagues smell the rat they want a share too.

More

Banking is a parallel world with no moral boundaries and rules. The big crash in 2008 made that painfully clear to the people. J.C. Chandor’s thriller MARGIN CALL already showed the frightening reality that lurks behind the scenes. While bosses form beads of sweat on their forehead, hands are shaken somewhere else since there is always someone who profits – even in a crisis. Misanthropic broker Michael Burry is the first to discover that something is off in the market. Simple Americans are being sold hair-raising credits. The real estate bubble will inevitably burst. While the obvious truth is ignored by the higher ups of the credit institutions, Burry prepares to make a win from the crash. He bets against the real estate market – which is actually an area that is crisis-free – and cashes in on the banks that are giving him billions for the offer. Some coworkers are perplexed and start researching themselves. They see that Burry is right and want a ticket on the money train.
The fact that the bank world is an inhuman field is really nothing new but it is thrilling and entertaining in the hands of Adam McKay, who is actually a specialist in outlandish comedies like ANCHORMAN. McKay’s playful signature is recognizable but he takes the material very seriously. His excellent ensemble does the same. The first half will make your head spin with financial jargon being spouted a mile a minute and attempts at clarification by interspersed cameos by Selena Gomez or Margot Robbie in a bathtub backfire.
