Neo-realist take on Romeo And Juliet set in rural Italy

Because the fiancees Angela (Marina Vlady) and Pasquale (Marcello Mastroianni) cannot afford the traditional wedding feast, they pretend to have a falling out, so they can get married in secret. But soon the mock argument causes a very real and very serious family conflict.
