Suspiria

A strange dance school, brutal murders, a coven. Luca Guadagnino‘s eagerly awaited new adaptation of Dario Argento‘s horror classic.

More

Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of Dario Argento‘s sacred SUSPIRIA does everything a remake should. While hundreds of Argento adepts tried to imitate the unique combination of music, color, and fetish in Argento‘s film in recent years, Gaudagnino doesn‘t linger on that for a second. He takes the story – dancer Suzie Bannion from Ohio flies to Germany to study at Helena Markos‘ dance academy and discovers a coven – as seriously as possible, more seriously than Argento in any case. Guadagnino connects it more with German history in 1977, the German Autumn, and the start of Germans coping with their past. Guadagnino is one of the most subtle and meticulous contemporary directors. Every element is spot on here, at least in the atmospheric sense. In divided Berlin the spaces either look like the legacy of the past can‘t be dusted away or labyrinthine mirror and corridor escapes behind which many living corpses could lie. The dance scenes look as if Guadagnino really dealt with magical practices in the film, the Cinétrance films of Jean Rouch. Emotional intensity carries over to bodily excess rituals, one of the principles of magical effect. Only the gimmick of having Tilda Swinton playing three roles – the head witch Madame Blanc (fantastic) and Professor Klemperer, who is reminiscent of Victor Klemperer who knew a lot about fascism and magic but degenerates to a “Tilda show“ here – is unnecessary and even irritating.
