Sumangali means “happy bride” or “happily married woman.” Behind the Sumangali-program is a perennial contact between textile employers and the parents of young daughters. The young women's work is the dowry they need to bring to a marriage. They get little to no pay, are expected to work long hours with no breaks, and are often sexually abused. Roughly 200,000 young girls aged between 14 and 18 are lured into this program which, in reality, is a human trafficking program. The documentary depicts these women’s stories.
