An airplane crashes right in the middle of Manhattan’s skyscrapers. A flaming inferno rips through the streets. Chelsey Sullenberger wakes up from a nightmare in his hotel room. It’s 2009. New York is still traumatized by 9/11. The country needs a hero and finds it in “Sully.” The experienced pilot and his partner Jeff Skiles saved 155 passengers by ditching into the Hudson River on airbus 320 right after a flock of birds caused two engines to fall out during takeoff. Was the emergency landing really necessary? And how does the sudden fame affect the experienced pilot who is just about to retire? Clint Eastwood tells the story of legendary flight 1549 from Sully’s perspective who is embodied with calm integrity by Tom Hanks. Hanks can perfectly capture the average man who worries about his wife being besieged by reporters at home while he helplessly sits in his hotel. The hearing and the hours in the hotel room, where nightmares and self-doubt plague him, are at the center of the film and based on Sullenberger’s recordings. The thrilling sequences on board are effectively staged by Eastwood. That’s how the old hand builds the tension and mostly avoids patriotic idol worship. The verbal lapses of the 86 year old Republican have discredited him in recent years and it seems like Eastwood is getting closer to his misanthropic character Walt Kowalski from GRAN TORINO . One might not share his world views but he is still a master of his craft and SULLY will surely be in the running in the coming Oscars.
