Ken Loach is angry. Very angry. While Pedro Almodóvar and Martin Scorsese look back self-reflexively, Woody Allen loses himself in nostalgic reveries, and Clint Eastwood amuses himself with senior gangsters, Ken Loach is more present and irreconcilable than ever. His new film SORRY WE MISSED YOU takes the ‘I Incorporated‘ world to task. Ricky Turner from Newcastle is a self-employed parcel carrier. If everything goes well, he and his wife Abbie, an outpatient geriatric nurse, can pay off their little house. In the hopes of having a life that‘s at least a bit more comfortable, the Turners sell Abbie‘s small car and get a delivery van. What they didn‘t count on is the relentless pressure. There‘s no buffer in case things don‘t go well: every delay is penalized with sanctions, and if Ricky can‘t make it he has to pay for a replacement driver himself. The first thing a colleague gives him is a plastic bottle which he can pee in when he doesn‘t have time to make a stop.

While their son Seb skips school and is in desperate need for attention, Ricky races across the city with castastrophe always looming. Even though there are moments of warmth and security in their private life, it because shockingly clear that there‘s no plan B for the Turners. Just like during the start of industrialization, the smallest cogs in the global markets don‘t have any security and barely any prospects. Ken Loach and his long-time screenwriter Paul Laverty depict this with a sense of urgency and energy that filmmakers 60 years their junior can‘t keep up with. This political two person movement isn‘t planning on shutting up as long as there are grievances that need to be called out. And that‘s a very good thing.
