The desire to dissolve into the other, to merge with one another – after I AM LOVE, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME and BONES AND ALL, with QUEER as his latest, it is crystal clear that this is the glowing core around which Luca Guadagnino's cinematic work revolves. With the adaptation of William S. Burrough’s eponymous novel, not only did he fulfill a lifelong dream, but he also generously gifted his audience. Once again he proves himself to be a highly concentrated painter who makes the canvas shake with nervously shimmering brushstrokes: each individual image becomes a captivating painting that deserves to be framed for eternity.

1950s Mexico City is brought back to life with pastel yellow and ochre tones. In this model-like setting, washed-up William Lee (Daniel Craig) wanders through the nightly bars of the American expat community, always indulging in alcohol and other drugs. And occasionally finding a spark of comfort with younger men in run-down hotel rooms. During his wanderings, he becomes infatuated with Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young ex-marine. The latter initially reacts to Lee's excessive interest with bewilderment, but eventually gives in to the clumsy advances of the aging gentleman.

Head over heels in love, Lee convinces Eugene to accompany him on a trip to the jungle to try the hallucinogenic drug Yagé there. From then on, the film turns into a surrealist trip and culminates in a dream sequence that would make even David Lynch envious. QUEER is a masterpiece of almost disturbing beauty, in which Daniel Craig, as the tragic main character, finally emancipates himself from his Bond image with a haunting performance.
