“You played the lottery and this is what you got”: This is how Torsten’s best friend summarised Torsten winning 22 million in the lottery. But this simple statement raises a million questions. Should one really accept so much money? What do you do with it? Who do you tell and who not? What does suddenly being rich do to you? Is it a blessing or a curse?
Fabian Möhrke introduces the viewer to the life of a normal guy. Torsten has a job, a wife, a son, and a house: As he put it, "I like my life." For fun he decides to buy a lottery ticket, like everyone else in the office, but he ends up winning the jackpot. He was advised not to tell anyone outside his close circle of friends and relatives, something that is easier said than done in a small town. Soon everything revolves around the sum of money and everyone has an opinion as to what to do with it except the winner himself: His girlfriend Suse wants to open a store, his son would like a 200 Euro allowance, he gives his best friends a million Euros and they use it to buy a house in France. But the film's protagonist doesn't want to turn his life upside down, even though that is what is expected from him. The film shows us a side of winning the lottery that is not usually seen. Instead of exotic trips, there is an unwanted vacation, and family stress replaces the anticipated idyll. MILLIONEN is a story of the misfortune of being lucky even though you didn't need it - an impressive commentary on our society's insatiable search for comfort.
