Loro

Paolo Sorrentino's portrait of a sleazy mogul, who closely resembles Silvio Berlusconi, is a bitter reckoning with his home country's political system.

Silvio Berlusconi‘s name is almost never uttered in LORO, but it‘s clear to everyone who the always widely grinning mogul at the center is and who the sycophants are that he surrounds himself with. Even though Paolo Sorrentino embellishes a lot of the plot of his reckoning with his home country's political system, he also processes a lot of facts that sound too absurd to be true. Sorrentino first chooses the perspective of upstart Sergio (Riccardo Scarmarcio). The constantly coked up womanizer is on his way to the top. All that he‘s missing is meeting “him.“ He wants to get Silvio‘s attantion at a wild party where he feeds pills to a large group of women. The plan seems to be going well. Something is happening at the feudal ranch of his Excellency. But Silvio‘s (Toni Servillo) attention is on his wife Veronica (Elena Sofia Ricci), who has had enough of the sleazy theatre after years of marriage. Sorrentino‘s film starts off biting, wild, and loud and becomes more and more calm and thoughtful with time. Just like when he exposed Rome‘s high society in LA GRANDE BELLEZZA, he knows how to captures the intoxicating images with dazzling lighting here too. The sequences look more like glossy viddeo clips and the music selection is also very tasteful. LORO provokes with its caustic humor and overt sexism. Most of the young, pretty women are commodities that win you the elections and influential allies. But viewers also get a certain hangover and when the film turns its focus on Silvio‘s home life almost all of the other figures in the first act are forgottten. The two halves that have been split in two in Italian cinemas don‘t make for a homogenous whole in the director‘s cut.
