Love Movie

Lenz is a slacker and Ira is, too, or so Lenz thought. But then Ira starts talking about having children. Lenz splits.

The wonderful debut film that professional and romantic couple Robert Bohrer and Emma Rosa Simon have made is a conscious play on conventions and cliches. The title alone reveals what it‘s about, because it it is indeed a LIEBESFILM (LOVE FILM): a film about love, how it begins, develops, and almost vanishes, only to remain in the end.

In the beginning Lenz (Eric Klozsch) and Ira (Lana Cooper) meet each other, spend a few hours after a druggy night, and become something akin to a couple in the end. Only akin to, because Lenz and Ira are around 30 and live in Berlin, which is reminiscent of countless cliches that have been repeated ad infinitum in recent German cinema and with which Bohrer and Simon relish to play with. Lenz ("spring" in German), isn‘t just called that, in his mind springtime will last forever and he will never have to tie himself down, navigating the world in a non-committal way while keeping all of his options open. Ira, a computer expert, puts her bullet-proof vest on every few weeks and flies to Afghanistan, where she installs secure networks. That‘s why it takes a long time before the adventure becomes more than that, when Ira asks Lenz the simple but disconcerting question: “Do you want children?“

Nothing is as it was after that, the lightness of the relationship disappears, but not the film‘s. Boher and Simon change known patterns in a wonderfully playful way, play with cliches and surreal motifs, and substantiate the old filmmaker chestnut that it isn‘t about what‘s being told, but how.
