“I wish I could live through something.“ The yearning for experience is what director Greta Gerwig expresses through her protagonist. A yearning that‘s especially big when you‘re just starting your life and feel as though you haven‘t seen anything and your own bubble is too close to recognize its individual beauty. Christine McPherson (Saorise Ronan), who calls herself “Lady Bird,“ is bored of idyllic Sacramento, her sheltered California, and the year 2002. She lets it out on her mother (Laurie Metcalf). She works double shifts in the hospital, her husband has become unemployed and has to compete with younger people on the job market. The daughter and mother are constantly fighting: Lady Bird is annoyed by the adult problems that seem to stand in her way, her mother doesn‘t feel valued for all of her sacrifices. At the surface the two have friction because of something like the car radio, but actually it‘s the process of cutting the cord that is hard for both of them. It‘s hard for the parents that their child doesn‘t need them anymore. It‘s hard for the children to still need their parents. Lady Bird has her first time in the film. It isn‘t like she imagined it would be, of course. His name is Kyle, he‘s in a band, smokes rolled cigarettes, and lives on the “right side of the tracks,“ meaning the dream houses of the wealthy and not where Lady Bird and her family live. When she leaves his house close to tears, she walks past the father who is sleeping in an armchair. Her mother is waiting outside in the car and she falls into her arms crying.
