Juliet, Naked

Annie's relationship with the eternal fanboy Duncan has been stale for a while. Then she meets the object of Duncan's adoration, the obscure singer/songwriter Tucker Crowe.

Nick Hornby knows a lot about the 30+ year old men in crisis. We have seen this on screen in FEVER PITCH, HIGH FIDELITY, and ABOUT A BOY. In JULIET, NAKED it‘s a woman who is in the midst of an early midlife crisis. Annie (Rose Byrne) lives in a little nest in the southeast of England, manages her father‘s estate at the local museum and is stuck on the past just like her husband Duncan (Chris O‘Dowd). His obsession with US singer songwriter Tucker Crowe, who never released anything after his mediocre break up album dedicated to his old flame “Juliet“ has become pathological. His room in their home together is filled with memorabilia, he talks to similarly minded music nerds online, and has wild theories about what Crowe is up to. When Annie begins to question the future of her relationship, their days together are numbered. The process is sped up by a lively pen friendship that Annie accidentally initiates with Tucker Crowe. He is faced with the wreckage of his life path, has numerous children scattered all around the world, and lives in his ex‘s garage. When he comes to London by chance, one of the most unusual love triangles in movie history begins.

Hornby deconstructs his very normal figures with his typical laconic humor. As always, music plays a decisive role and JULIET, NAKED has an excellent soundtracks which Ethan Hawke contributed a few songs to. The likable ensemble and director Jesse Peretz (OUR IDIOT BROTHER) who gives them space to develop makes sure that the romantic tragicomedy is much more than a nicely shot mixtape.
