Inside

Willem Dafoe plays art thief Nemo who is trapped by an automatic security system of the luxury penthouse which he wanted to rob.

How is value measured in art? What value does art have when, instead of being looked at, it leads a lonely existence in a private penthouse? For Nemo, a master in his field, art is the most important good. But when the art thief gets stuck in the highly secured smart home of a top-class collector while on the job, it becomes worthless. The three million dollar self portrait of Egon Schiele becomes a common object, the bronze sculpture by Lynn Chadwick becomes a lever to open locked doors behind which there is no way out. For Nemo, it is about sheer survival, because there‘s no water coming from the pipes and the fridge is empty. The resourceful thief, who usually knows how to get out of any sticky situation, is trapped in a golden cage – and we are only with him. This requires an excellent main actor who is fearless. In his film debut, Greek writer and director Vasilis Katsopis snagged Willem Dafoe and gave him 100 minutes of screen time. Nameless supporting characters only appear in the surveillance camera images outside. Along with the powerful image composition of Steve Annis (I AM MOTHER) and the clever screenplay of Katsoupis and Ben Hopkins (THE NINE LIVES OF THOMAS KATZ) it is primarily Dafoe‘s acting that‘s admirable. His slow physical and mental deterioration is painfully palpable. At the same time, the direction holds the tension with Nemo‘s new ideas for how to break out of the luxurious prison, driven by his own creative energy. A new art of isolation emerges. The claustrophobic tour de force was filmed in a Cologne studio in the middle of the pandemic. Due to the conditions, INSIDE receives an additional, frighteningly contemporary layer.
