It’s true that life gives us the most fascinating stories but that doesn’t mean they are actually told. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson are historic (everyday) heroines, but they aren’t mentioned in history books – and cinema often has no space for them either. Until now. HIDDEN FIGURES is dedicated to the lives of three African-American women who worked for NASA in 1960s Virginia. All three are excellent mathematicians but their gender and race stand in the way of their career advancement. The more competitive the US gets with Russia, the more work force is needed. New opportunities arise: math genius Katherine (Taraji P. Henson) works directly under the head of the space task force (Kevin Costner), Mary (Janelle Monáe) wants to legally fight for the right to become an engineer, and Dorothy (Octavia Spencer) is especially gifted with this brand new device called a computer. Equality is far from being a reality, as the next bathroom for blacks is many buildings away…
Though the true story of these women is unusual, it is told in a very conventional matter. Director Theodore Melfi (ST.VINCENT) directs a feel good film that won’t scare anyone away. That makes it impressively effective with the right amount of pathos, lovely images, and great music (made by co-producer Pharrell Williams). Most of all it focuses on its three wonderful protagonists (and actresses), who deserve just that!
