An aging American professor (Burt Lancaster) has the peace and quiet of his home disturbed, when the vulgar countess Brumonti (Silvana Mangano) moves into the Professor's palazzo with her family and young lover. On the one hand, the Professor feels disturbed but the liveliness the new arrivals add to his life is alos enjoyable.
