The film's main character is the Dr. Barner Sanatorium in the Harz Mountains. Paul Klee, Frida von Uslar-Gleichen, and Hans-Erich Nossack, among others, found peace here. Their letters from the sanatorium can be heard repeatedly on the soundtrack.
The story of two people going through crises coincides with the history of the last sanatorium of its kind. For more than a century, people have come to this place in the hope of being cured.
