A car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two goons to kidnap his wife so he can pocket the ransom. Things escalate and soon three people are dead in the snow. Which brings the case to the attention of Sheriff Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) who comes across like a very nice person but is unrelenting when it comes to getting to the bottom of things.
