Buenos Aires in the early eighties: the dictatorship is over, democracy is still new. The population doesn’t have a lot of faith in the government. Many go about business as usual. The Puccio family is well-regarded in the neighborhood. The most flourishing spots in the city belong to them, the eldest son Alejandro is a celebrated Rugby player, and the Puccios are respected and loved. But behind the bourgeois facade father Arquímedes has a successful business consisting of kidnapping and blackmailing which the entire family condone. When the head of the house crosses the last moral limit, Alejandro wants to back out but Arquímedes forces his son to keep working.
The matter of course in which Arquímedes, who worked under the Junta, commits these heinous acts is what is horrific about EL CLAN. The distinguished family man next door snatches the offspring of wealthy families and goes shopping with the same vehicle afterwards. Once in charge of political kidnapping during the dictatorship, he is completely immune to empathy. The network of corruption, power, and bondage keeps getting tighter and more extreme and carries over to the highest levels of government. Based on a known case, EL CLAN became the most successful film of the year in Argentina. Director Pablo Trapero (LION’S DEN) received the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. His strong ensemble and the vivid depiction of the era give frightening insight into a dark chapter in Argentinean history.
