A film which Ingmar Bergman described as ‘a work of genius’, EDVARD MUNCH is a portrait of the famed Norwegian expressionist painter. Watkins focuses on Munch’s formative years in late 19th century Kristiania, a period of rapid social transformation. Again using a large cast of non-professional actors, Edvard Munch also continues Watkins’ interest in historical representation and challenging of cultural and societal myths. The filmmaker has called it his most personal film.
