Äta sova dö

Raşa is a hard working girl with a good heart, but when she loses her job times get tough for her and her father. Gabriela Pichler’s EAT SLEEP DIE is reminiscent of Mike Leigh’s tenderly realistic tragi-comedies.

More

The 21-year old Raşa works in a vegetable-packing factory in Sweden. She can guess 175 grams of salad with her left hand to the gram and can package the salad in 4.5 seconds. Still, she is laid off when the factory starts to feel the effects of the financial crisis. Though her father has serious health problems and shouldn’t be working, he takes on a backbreaking job in Norway. Despite the setbacks and disappointments that Raşa experiences while she tirelessly looks for a job, the film is most interested in her strength, humanity, and the talent she herself doesn’t yet recognise: Raşa is good with people. The affection with which Gabriele Pichler treats her characters in EAT, SLEEP, DIE is reminiscent of Mike Leigh’s tender proletarian tragicomedies. Beyond the harsh realities there is kindness, honour, and love between Raşa and her friends. Pichler herself is from a Bosnian family in Sweden and worked in a cookie factory before going to film school. Her in-depth knowledge of the story she tells is evident in every scene. For example, when Raşa trains a part-time university student and she hides her insecurity behind disdain and casual bravado. Given their class division, it is not surprising that the two don’t become friends. Or when Raşas work colleagues complain to her about being let go and blame foreign workers and Muslims for losing their jobs, Raşa is not politically but personally offended: “You’re aren’t allowed to say that, Papa and I are also Muslims.”
