Tom Waits is Zack, a down and out Radio DJ who has just been caught with a body in the trunk of the car he was asked to drive across town. John Lurie is Jack, a pimp who has been set up with an underage girl by a competitor, and Roberto Begnini is the card sharpening chatterbox Roberto. The three men meet in prison where they immediately go on each other’s nerves, before they escape together and become buddies, sort of. Jarmusch’s third feature (after PERMANENT VACATION and STRANGERS IN PARADISE) blends fairytale sweetness with his customary laconic style. The cinematography is by Robby Müller who also worked for Wim Wenders and Lars von Trier.
