DIE TOCHTER is Mascha Schilinski‘s first feature film and makes one curious about what she will do next. The film examines the complex dynamic of a not particularly well-functioning 3 person family. Hannah and Jimmy separated 2 years ago. It was a shock for Luca who was 5 then. Now she‘s come to terms with it. She lives with mom and idolizes dad who strengthens this feeling by always bashing mom together with her. When Hannah says not to start eating without her, Jimmy takes a bite when she turns her back and Luca finds it funny. When everything becomes too much for Hanna and she needs a moment for herself the 7 year old has to figure out what to do with herself. Sometimes Jimmy doesn‘t contact Luca for days even though he promised to. It would go too far to call the family dysfunctional, but she‘s definitely not sheltered. Hannah, Jimmy, and Luca go to Greece once more to the place with the blue doors where Luca found out about her parent‘s separation. They want to clean it and sell it. Hannah and Jimmy get closer under the holiday sun but instead of being happy, Luca feels left out. She‘s suddenly not the center and the point of reference anymore. With the beaming sun, black sand, and rugged cliffs in the background, a intense threeway relationship drama plays out in which Luca is an equal counterpart. Schilinski stages the family tension with a threatening untertone that makes you fear for the worst. She changes perspectives, taking the perspective of the parents and then Luca‘s. But it‘s Luca‘s feelings that are mostly expressed in the symbolic imagery.
