Die Habenichtse

Just after 9/11: impulsive newlyweds Jakob and Isabelle move to London to flee from tragedy and a lack of purpose. But the world they find is silent and threatening. Do they still have each other or themselves?

Berlin, September 2001. Jacob (Sebastian Zimmler), an ambitious lawyer, and Isabelle (Julia Jentsch), an increasingly frustrated graphic designer, meet each other at a vernissage a decade after their student romance. When they hear that their mutual friend Hans died in the World Trade Center attacks they rediscover the spark they once had. They marry each other on a whim and move to London together, where Jakob takes over the job Hans was supposed to have. While Jakob feels increasingly guilty and disillusioned about his successful career, Isabelle fails at acclimating to a new social environment filled with lewd alcoholics and broke dealers.
Katharina Hacker’s book intersected the fates of different people from very different social classes but always circled the same topic. Director Florian Hoffmeister reduces this mélange to its “essence” without being moralistic. Isabelle and Jacob go about their life in a literal black and white world, meet each other and are pulled apart without any hold or control over their own tragedy. The longer they are together the less they talk to each other. The only real relationships they have are to the people they once wanted to be like or saw in each other. They desperately wish not to be alone anymore and house a passion with no goal or definition that is never quenched.
