The physicist Stephen Hawking is without a doubt a remarkable person. There are six documentary films alone dedicated to his exceptional life story and theories. Hawking has already appeared in STAR TREK, the SIMPSONS and the BIG BANG THEORY and his computer voice could be heard in the short film HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT IN 60 SECONDS. THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is about Hawking and his first wife Jane Wilde, a philologist and devout member of the Church of England, on whose memoir the film is based. The question of whether or not there is room in Hawking’s universe for the existence of God is one of the film’s main themes. Hawking was and is an atheist and a socialist. He has always stressed that his theory of the universe, the concept of God is not necessary. Even more interesting is the depiction of Stephen and Jane’s relationship that intensified after Hawking was given a life expectancy of two years after his diagnosis of a debilitating motor neuron disease. Jane and Stephen were married for twenty-five years and have three children. The film portrays Hawking – played by Oscar-worthy Eddie Redmayne – as a charming young man with a ferocious will. He doesn’t want to be helped and when he must then only his wife is allowed to assist him. When it becomes too much for her, conflict arises and she gradually falls in love with the widowed choirmaster. Apparently even Stephen Hawking himself shed tears at the film’s premiere.
