The 100-year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

On his 100th birthday Allan Karlsson escapes from his retirement home and embarks on a bizarre road trip while telling his equally bizarre life story. A charming adaptation of Jonas Jonasson’s bestselling novel with a sprinkle of black comedy.

More

Just minutes before Allan Karlsson is about to celebrate his 100th birthday, he climbs out of the window of his retirement home and disappears. His quick getaway takes him to a bus stop in Malmköping where he gets on the next bus to a nearby town called Byringe. As he gets on the bus he decides to steal the suitcase of a rough-edged rocker who asked him to watch over it. In Byringe he befriends the 70-year old Julius Jonsson and discovers that the suitcase contains 50 million in cash. From this point on the film the story develops in numerous directions. Julius and Allan are on the run from the rocker gang and along the way recruit an indecisive student and a resolute owner of an elephant.

At a leisurely tempo befitting their age, the pair outsmarts the rocker gang to survive a number of dangerous situations as they make their way across Sweden. While they are on the run, the simple-minded Allan recollects his life story. It turns out that his skill for blowing things up and his passion for schnapps unintentionally placed him close to the central events of the twentieth century –during the Spanish Civil War he inadvertently saves Franco’s life, in the USA he gives Oppenheimer advice on his invention of the atomic bomb, and in Stalin’s Russia he ends up as a double-agent. With a good pinch of black humour and wacky yet likeable characters director Felix Herngren made an entertaining road movie out of Jonas Jonasson’s 400-page bestseller. The fully absurd coincidences in both narratives, present and past, line up in colourful images.
