Four peasant family are tending the land they leased to scrape out a meagre existence in the Bergamo countryside of the late 19th century. When one of the farmers cuts down a tree to make clogs for his son's walk to school, this rouses the ire of their landlord.

The peasants are played by real agarians and at the time, the film was groundbreaking for its use of dialect.
