The evening starts out as a normal dinner party with friends in a suburban house. Four couples discussing the usual problems and topics. And then suddenly weird things start to happen after a power failure and the phone lines go down. The explanation offered is that a comet is scheduled to pass by earth that evening. That the comet has had further side effects is only clear when they try and contact the neighbors. The insecurity and suspense builds subtlety and leads to full-fledged panic and group meltdown. Old stories of betrayal and treachery come to light and realities are shaken up. The dinner guests fare about as well as Schrödinger‘s cat before the measurement. They know something is happening but they don’t know what. The characters fear losing their identities once they become semi-aware that a time-space continuum has gone awry. When watching the improvised, low-budget production it is wise to pay attention to the details at the beginning for a satisfactory analysis at film’s end. COHERENCE, a sci-fi horror and relationship drama at the same time, deserves a second glance given its complexity.
